The case that it survives

One side of the debate framed in Will Scrum survive the AI era?. This page argues the yes deliberately and one-sidedly. The opposing view is the case that it fades.

Thesis: AI does not retire Scrum's kernel — it vindicates it. Every force AI introduces increases uncertainty about correctness and intent, and empirical process control is the discipline for exactly that condition.

Faster feedback is the whole point

Agile was a revolt against slow feedback. AI is a more extreme swing in the same direction: prototype in minutes, not weeks. The premise — inspect a real increment, then adapt — doesn't weaken when increments get cheaper; it gets more powerful. A team that can run the loop ten times a day needs the loop's discipline more than the team that ran it twice a month, not less.

The bottleneck moved onto Scrum's home turf

When generation is free, the scarce resource is trust: is this correct, and is it what we meant? That is not a coding question — it is an inspection question. The artifacts Scrum already carries are the ones that answer it:

  • Definition of Ready / Definition of Done become more central, not less. They are how a team states the bar that AI output must clear. Cheap generation makes the bar the product.
  • A named source of truth and preserved intent are the only defence against confident, plausible, wrong work — which is the dominant failure mode of AI-assisted delivery.
  • Human accountability per artifact stops being a platitude and becomes the load-bearing rule (see the doctrine). Someone owns the claim; someone verified it.

The ceremonies that earn their keep

  • The retrospective survives on pure merit. When tooling shifts monthly, inspect and adapt of the human+AI system itself is the highest-leverage hour in the building.
  • Review and demo become the heartbeat. The synchronization point doesn't vanish — it relocates from "did we write it" to "did we verify it," which is where the risk now lives.
  • Intent alignment before work matters more as the team gets smaller and the agents get faster — a wrong heading is now executed in an afternoon.

Smaller teams still need the kernel

It is tempting to say "one human plus agents needs no process." The opposite holds: a small team moving fast with powerful tools is exactly the team that drifts from intent without noticing, accumulates unverified work, and mistakes motion for progress. The kernel — transparency, inspection, adaptation — is the cheapest insurance against that drift, and it costs less the smaller the team is.

What this side concedes

This is a steelman, not the whole truth. It concedes that the ceremony will change shape — story points and burndown are hard to defend — and that the word "Scrum" may not survive even if its kernel does. But the discipline endures, because the problem it solves got bigger, not smaller.
